Calculate a tip without guessing at the math

Use the calculator first, then use the guides when the question is about etiquette rather than arithmetic.

The basic calculation is tip = tip basis × tip percentage. The tip basis can be the pre-tax subtotal or the amount after tax, depending on the convention you choose. This site keeps tax, mandatory service charges, voluntary tips, and bill splitting separate so each part of the final total is visible.

For U.S. sit-down restaurant service, Emily Post currently lists 15–20% of the pre-tax bill as a general guideline. That is guidance, not a mandatory charge. If a restaurant has already added an automatic gratuity or service charge, read the receipt before adding another amount.

The IRS distinguishes voluntary tips from mandatory service charges and automatic gratuities for federal tax purposes. A voluntary tip is chosen by the customer; a required charge is not treated as a tip merely because a receipt calls it a gratuity.

When several people share a bill, equal splitting is convenient when spending is similar. If orders differ substantially, the uneven split calculator can assign personal and shared items, then allocate tax, service charges, and tips without losing remainder cents.

Practical answers for the questions a calculator cannot decide for you.

Tip calculator basics

How the calculator handles percentages, bill splitting, and browser-side calculations.

How is a tip calculated?

Multiply the amount you want to tip on by the selected tip percentage. Choose the pre-tax subtotal or the after-tax amount in the calculator.

How are split bills rounded?

The bill is allocated in the smallest currency unit. If it cannot divide evenly, one or more shares may differ by one unit so all shares still add back to the exact bill total.

Can I include sales tax and a service charge?

Yes. Sales tax can be entered as a percentage and a mandatory service charge can be entered separately from a voluntary tip.

Does Tip Calculator store my bill amount?

The calculator is designed to perform the math in your browser and does not require an account or server-side bill storage.
